Do not lay up for yourselves treasures on earth, where moth and rust destroy and where thieves break in and steal; but lay up for yourselves treasures in heaven, where neither moth nor rust destroys and where thieves do not break in and steal. (Matthew 6:19-20)
“The more we store up treasures in Heaven, the better we prepare ourselves for death.” Randy Alcorn
Jesus said that treasures we store up on earth will not last but treasures we store up in Heaven await us and will last forever. Where we store our treasures impacts how we face death. You and I are moving closer to death everyday. This means we are daily moving away from our earthly treasure. (You really cannot take it with you!) Beware! If our lives are built on accumulating treasures down here, death will be seen, felt, and feared as loss!
However, if we are laying up treasures in Heaven, we move closer to them daily as we move closer to death. In this case, death is gain. Alcorn says of one who lives like this, “It will bring him, at last, to what he treasures.”
Question: When you die, will you be remembered as one who accumulated treasures on earth that you couldn’t keep or as one who stored up treasures in heaven that you will never lose?
